A rare power piece from my personal collection, which has been in my keeping for nearly 15 years.
Active working with the soul forces is perfectly pictured in the Pelican. The Pelican is shown stabbing its breast with its beak and nourishing its young with its own blood. The alchemist must enter into a kind of sacrificial relationship with his inner being. He must nourish with his own soul forces, the developing spiritual embryo within.
Anyone who has made true spiritual development will know well this experience. One's image of one's self must be changed, transformed, sacrificed to the developing spiritual self. This is almost invariably a deeply painful experience, which tests one's inner resources.
Out of this will eventually emerge the spiritual self, transformed through the Pelican experience. The Pelican was in this spiritual sense a valid image of the Christ experience and was used as such by the early alchemists.
The pelican feeding its young from a self-inflicted wound in its own breast is accepted as an appropriate symbol of both sacrifice and resurrection.
To the Christian Mystic the pelican signifies Christ, who saved humanity (the baby birds) through the sacrifice of His own blood.
The pelican may also be considered as representative of the Sun, whose rays (blood) are the life of the seven philosophical planets depicted as the pelican’s brood.
In the Mysteries, the pelican represents the resurrection of the candidate from the dead. The mother bird signifies those divine institutions which passes the secret doctrine, which is the spiritual life of man.”
It was the ancient belief that three days after the father pelican had killed his own young, the mother resurrected them by wounding herself and permitting her blood to flow over their bodies.

In Masonic symbolism the blood of the pelican stands for the Secret Work by which man is ‘raised’ from the slavery of ignorance to the condition of freedom conferred by wisdom.
As the Rose Croix degree is based upon Rosicrucian and Hermetic symbolism, it follows that the pelican represents one of the vessels in which the experiments of alchemy are performed, and its blood that mysterious tincture by which the base metals (the young baby birds) are transmuted into spiritual gold.”
“Both the rose and the pelican signify the highest expression of human and divine affection. The love of the mother bird for her young typifies the emotion of the Creator for those creatures which He fashioned during the Seven Sacred Days.
The word, ‘Rose’ is a simple anagram, for from the rearrangement of its letters is derived the word ‘Eros’ — the name of the Greek god of love.”
This is the perfect putrefaction, when all blackness has disappeared and the color white appears. Then it is said that life has conquered death, that the king has been revived, that earth and water has become air, that the child has been born, that Heaven (the Volatile, the Female) and Earth (the Fixed, the Male) have married. It is the realm of the Moon.
When one has purified his awareness of Self, during meditation, by eliminating thoughts, or otherwise, then at a certain point, light appears. This can be but is not necessary a visual light inside oneself.
The light that appears is also metaphoric for an absolute clear, pure awareness of Self. It is something that cannot be described. I have experienced it myself, although for very brief periods. One does not indeed experience the darkness anymore that is there when one closes the eyes.
The alchemists say that in Whiteness, the Matter has attained a degree of Fixedness that fire cannot destroy. In that state one is in a very fixed position, that is, very stable, very much in the here and now, in total clarity of Self. The Philosophers say that when one has attained this stage, one needs to destroy the books because they become superfluous. From this point on one needs to continue this purification of awareness to the next stage of redness.
Andara’, meaning ‘Light of Beauty and Perfection’
